My name is Jasmine Frederick, and I am from Homestead, Florida. Ever since I was young, I’ve been involved in some sort of aviation. My uncle was an FAA flight inspector for over 35 years and regaled us with dozens of stories from his adventures in the cockpit. Our family friend, Eldridge Williams, was one of the Tuskegee Airmen and we were made well aware of the struggles and barriers he and other minorities had to overcome to try to get the opportunity to fly. My mother was hired as a flight attendant back in 1997, which allowed us to frequent the friendly skies since we were babies, unlocking the doors to travel experiences and intercultural exposures which would have been otherwise impossible. My father was always building and flying some sort of model aircraft. Whether glider or helicopter, those RC models provided hours of smiles and laughter sprinkled with lessons on aerodynamics and flight principles.
We spent countless afternoons at our local airports in Miami and Homestead Florida, just watching the approaches and landings for hours on end. We met many students and instructors, watching them come and go over the years, always hoping, planning, and saving to get the opportunity to be the one in the cockpit but the resources were never there to actually engage the whole training process in earnest. I've been taught to look for opportunities to reach out, and help the next person up too. I’m excited for the day where i’m in a position to pay it forward and help those around me up just as I’m being helped up now. All in all, it feels like GOD is laying a hand on my life and opening a door to my destiny. I feel nothing but gratitude.
